Anti-social elements targeted yet another Ambedkar statue at Thuthipet village in Villianur here early on Tuesday morning leading to tension in the area. Activists from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) protested the act of vandalism by blocking traffic on the road leading to Thirukkanur.
On information, Superintendents of Police Deivasigamani (SP Rural) and Bairavasamy (SP South) along with inspectors Balakrishnan, Mohankumar, Shanmughasundaram and Purushothaman rushed to the spot to calm the situation. Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and order) Omveer Singh Bishnoi, sub-collector Parthiban and tahsildar Yashwanthiah also reached the spot.
VCK state leader Paavaanan pointed out that it was not the first time that anti-social elements had damaged an Ambedkar statue.
In the previous instances too, no action was taken by the police and the culprits went scott-free, he added. Alleging that false cases were often lodged against Dalits instead of the real criminals, Paavaanan urged the SSP to take firm action against those involved in the vandalism so that such incidents are not repeated.
The activists dispersed only after senior police officials assured arrest of those involved in the desecration of the statue. The demonstration led to traffic on the road being affected for more than 40 minutes.
Vandalism of Ambedkar statues have led to clashes between Dalits and Vanniyars in the past.
